Fellowes FAQ`s

Jam Proof System

  1.   How does the Jam Proof System work?

   2.   How can you say that the Fellowes® Shredder is 100% Jam Proof?

   3.   I counted the sheets I was going to feed into my shredder and they equal
the shredder's sheet capacity; however, the red indicator lights are going on. Why isn't
the shredder taking the paper?

4.   When I feed paper into the paper entry, the initial sheet capacity light
shows "green" but the lights move up into the "orange" and "red" zone as the paper
feeds through the cutters. Why is this happening?

 5.  Does it damage my shredder if it is shredding while the lights are in the
orange or red zone?

   6.  I was feeding paper into my shredder but suddenly the motor stopped and
the light panel was completely lit up. Nothing happened for several seconds, then the
light panel started to flash. Why did this occur?

  7.  I was feeding paper into my shredder but suddenly the motor stopped and
the light panel was completely lit up. Nothing happened for several seconds, then the
motor started and the paper was reversed out of the entry. Why did this occur?

 8.   I was in a hurry and I fed stacks of paper into the shredder too quickly.
The light panel was completely lit up and the motor stopped. I didn't know what was
happening so I didn't touch the paper. After a few seconds, the light panel started
flashing, the motor started, and the paper began to move but then the "paper jam icon"
lit up and the shredder stopped. Did my shredder jam?

  9.  I was manually forwarding documents through my shredder and the
shredder jammed. How come the 100% Jam Proof Shredder is jammed?

  10.  My shredder continued to run after it had completed shredding. The light
panel and the "jam icon" lit up afterwards. What's wrong?

 11.  My Fellowes shredder has an automatic oiling system. The oil indicator
light was on but when I poured oil into the reservoir, it backed up and didn't feed into
the machine. Why did this occur?

12.  I occasionally hear a funny buzzing sound coming from my shredder
while I'm shredding. What is causing the noise?

13.   I just filled my AutoOil'" reservoir. How do I test the system to ensure it is
working?

14.  My AutoOil'" system only has two or three oil nozzles. Is this adequate
for conditioning the cutters?

 15.   Will paper dust clog the AutoOil'" nozzles?

 16.  I have a 400 Series machine. When I feed one piece of paper
and touch SafeSense®, the motor takes a few seconds to stop. If I feed a bigger stack
and touch SafeSense®, the motor stops right away. Is this normal?

Shredding CDs/DVDs and Credit Cards

     17.    I have a 400 Series shredder and I sometimes have difficulty shredding
CDs. Some CDs shred easily, but others bounce in the entry or only half of the CD is
shredded. Why does this occur?

      18.    I have a Fellowes® Jam Proof System Home Office Shredder. When I
shred CDs, the shredder seems to jam. Why?

      19.  I have a Fellowes® Jam Proof System Home Office Shredder. When I
shred CDs, the light panel does not light up. Why?

  1.  The Jam Proof System features a sensor inside the shredder paper entry that
detects paper thickness (using 75 gram 120 lb. paper) rather than sheet capacity. When the
sensor detects the shredder is overfed, the light panel turns red, and the shredder stops so you can remove excess paper to resume shredding

2.   Fellowes® Jam Proof Shredders provide four levels of protection against jams:
Level 1 - Stops jams before they start.
Most jams occur when the shredder is fed too much paper at one time. The light panel lets
you know when you are nearing maximum sheet capacity. If the light panel turns red, the
shredder has been overfed. The shredder will then pause so you can remove the extra paper
and resume shredding.
Level 2 - Stops fastfeed paper jams.
A fastfeed paper jam occurs when one stack of paper is inserted for shredding before the
previous stack finishes. When Fellowes® Jam Proof Shredders detect a fastfeed jam, the
shredder will pause to let you remove the extra paper so the shredder will resume shredding.
Level 3 - Stops misfeed paper jams. A misfeed paper jam occurs when paper is fed into
the shredder at an angle. Fellowes® Jam Proof Shredders provide a temporary turbo boost to
power through the paper when it is fed at an angle.
Level 4 - Stops wrinkled paper jams. When shredding, paper can wrinkle which makes the
paper too thick to power through. When this occurs, Fellowes® Jam Proof Shredders
automatically reverse the paper out of the cutters for easy removal

3.  The Jam Proof System is designed to shred the sheet capacity of the 75 gram 1
20 lb. paper we use in our factory. The paper you inserted may be thicker than the standard
paper measurement. Also note that if the paper has a high humidity content, the Jam Proof
sensor will detect that the paper is thicker than normal.

4.  As the cutters start to shred paper, a lot of vibration occurs inside the paper entry.
The vibration causes the indicator lights to flutter into a higher zone.

5.   No, the shredder will not be damaged if the red indicator lights are on during the
shredding cycle.

6.   When the light panel lit up and the motor stopped, your shredder sensed that it
was being overfed. This happens because of fastfed or misfed paper entering the shredder:
• A fastfeed paper jam occurs when one stack of paper is inserted for shredding before the
previous stack finishes. When Fellowes® Jam Proof Shredders detect a fastfeed jam, the
shredder will pause to let you remove the extra paper so the shredder can resume
shredding.
• A misfeed paper jam occurs when paper fed into the shredder folds or wrinkles.
Fellowes® Jam Proof Shredders provide a temporary turbo boost to power through the
paper when it is wrinkled.

7.   During shredding, the thickness of the paper stack is not consistent because of
wrinkles, smaller paper sizes, envelopes, etc. When the light panel lit up and the motor
stopped, your shredder sensed that it was being overfed. The shredder motor then paused
while the shredder processed the problem. If there are more sheets in the paper entry than
the cutting system can handle, the shredder reverses the paper out of the cutters to avoid a
jam. Just remove some sheets and re-insert the paper stack.

8.   A fastfeed occurs when one stack of paper is inserted before the previous stack
finishes, causing the shredder to jam. When Fellowes' Jam Proof shredders detect fastfed
paper, the shredder pauses to let you remove excess paper before it resumes shredding. If
there are more sheets in the entry than the cutting system can handle, the shredder reverses
the paper out of the cutters and the "paper jam icon" lights up. Just remove some sheets and
re-insert the paper stack.

9.  The manual forward key overrides or shuts off the Jam Proof System. To avoid
jams, always use the automated Jam Proof System.

10.   In most cases, if a shredder is running continuously, it does not indicate that
anything is broken. A majority of Fellowes shredders have two small electronic sensors in the
paper entry slot that signal each other. When the signal is broken by paper entering the
shredder, the shredder turns on, and after the paper passes through, the sensors recognize
that shredding is complete and the shredder turns off.
If paper dust, debris, or oil has covered the sensors, it can break the signals (incorrectly
telling the shredder that paper is being fed into the entry) which can cause the shredder to
run continuously. This typically occurs with cross-cut shredders when oil has clouded the
sensors.
To fix the problem, simply clean the sensors. To locate the sensors, unplug the shredder and
look into the paper entry. In the very center, there will be two small sensors that look like
small glass beads or marbles. If your model has a safety flap over the cutters, you may need
to lift this to gain access to the sensors.
Once you locate the sensors, use a damp Q-tip or cotton ball to wipe away residue or dust.
Also, if there is any visible paper debris in this area, remove with the Q-tip or needle-nosed
pliers.

11.   When you are refilling the oil reservoir, make sure that the door (where the oil
goes) is completely open. If the door is not fully extended, the lines that carry the oil to the
cutting system will not be open.

12.   The new 400 Series shredders feature an innovative automatic oiling system.
The machine automatically oils the cutters every 20 passes and creates a faint buzz or
humming sound when oil is pumped from the reservoir.

13.   You can manually oil the cutters by pressing the "Bulldog" key and the "Forward"
key simultaneously. Oil"';l1 be pumped through the two nozzles in the paper entry.

14.   As the two nozzles dispense oil, the oil saturates the paper being fed into the
shredder. As the paper is cut, it breaks up and works through all of the cutting blades. During
the cutting process, the oil transfers from the paper to the blades to thoroughly condition the
cutters.
 15.   You should not experience any problems with clogging since the AutoOil™
system oils the cutters automatically every 20 passes. Frequently conditioning the cutters
removes any dust that might accumulate over time.

16.   Because of the internal gear system and power level, 400 Series machines take
a little longer to stop than a SOHO machine. A larger paper stack causes more friction and
helps the gears stop a little quicker. For the most accurate demo of SafeSenseB Technology,
always feed a small stack of paper into the shredder rather than one sheet.

Shredding CDs/DVDs and Credit Cards

  17.  CDs and DVDs are made of a wide variety of materials that behave differently
when shredded. CDs that are burned or recorded by consumers tend to be softer and shred
fairly smoothly. Pre-recorded CDs/DVDs are made of more brittle material and are
sometimes difficult to shred. If you are shredding a CD or DVD and half of the CD is still intact,
simply shred some paper through the paper entry and it will carry the CD the rest of the way
through the cutters.

18.   Fellowes® Home Office Jam Proof System Shredders include a CD/Credit Card
flap that you need to rotate into position. You cannot shred CDs/DVDs and credit cards
properly if the flap is not in place.

19.   Fellowes® Home Office Jam Proof System Shredders include a CD/Credit Card
flap that you need to rotate into position. When the CD/Credit Card flap is locked in place, the
Jam Proof System is deactivated. This means the light panel will not light up while you shred
CDs/DVD or credit cards.
